The Solis stock fridge has been great for us. It has plenty of room and even on long trips has proven to be so much better than a cooler. We are a family of four and when meals are planned and packed properly we can survive for about 5 days of fridge food before we need to replenish.
Tips / Issues / Mods #
- Fridge control knob inside has a tendency to get bumped and change setting. Check it occasionally, especially if the batteries are draining faster than expected.
- The fridge has a tall bottle swing door in one of the internal racks, we don’t find it useful, but some may.
- The fridge does not fit normal juice bottles or milk cartons very well. Highly recommend purchasing items that have solid leak free lids/caps. This will allow you to put them their side in the fridge.
- The fridge is colder at the top than the bottom as the entire fridge is actually cooled by the freezer section. We have on occasion found that items on the top shelf have frozen if the fridge is set above 4.
- Freezer temp may not be cold enough to keep items frozen for a long period. We avoid bringing things like ice cream because it always seems like we need to crank the fridge to 5 or 6 to keep it frozen and then other items in the fridge freeze. YMMV
- The egg holders at the top of the door appears to be a joke. Lots of people swear by it, but there are vocal majority that have broken a lot of eggs in them. Still trying to find a good use for this space
- For long trips where we will be feeding more than four or we want extra protein a cooler is helpful. We will pack a cooler for frozen proteins and just pull items as we go out that we want to thaw in the fridge. This saves room in the fridge and a good cooler like a Yeti/rotomolded will keep items frozen for a week or so when packed well.
Fridge creeping out of cabinet #
I didn’t want to write much about this, but it really takes some explaining to know how to fix this. For some owners, the fridge has creeped forward over time and in rare cases come loose. There is a safety tether in the back, so it isn’t going to actually fall out or tip over.
The fridge sits in the cabinet with its feet resting on two pieces of wood that go along the sides inside the cabinet. The fridge is held in place by a safety tether in the back and four short wood screws in the front.
If the fridge starts to creep out of cabinet, first I would tighten or replace the screws with longer screws. Most of the time this will resolve the issue.
If the fridge is pretty far out of the cabinet, it really requires you to remove the fridge, fix the mounting and re-install. It is pretty easy to remove the fridge.
- Empty Fridge
- Turn off Fridge
- Unscrew lower venting on the passenger side of the fridge cabinet.
- Reach into vent area and unhook/unscrew (can’t remember how this attaches) the safety latch.
- Unplug the fridge power
- Slide fridge forward and remove
Once the fridge is out, make sure the fridge’s footing boards are in place along the sides on the floor of the cabinet. Some people have replaced these with bigger/better/stronger boards, I’m not sure it is necessary as the feet of the fridge are only on the sides.
Check the location where the front of the fridge screws into. On the inside passenger side of the cabinet there is a small trim board that is stapled into the cabinet and on the driver side of the cabinet it is just the cabinet itself that the fridge screws into. If there are cracked, dismounted, etc. replace, glue or fix in some way.
Install the fridge in the opposite order of removal.
